Incentives Available

Contractors enrolled in TECH Clean California can access significant incentives for installing heat pump water heaters:

  • Northern California: Incentives start at $1,100 for unitary heat pump water heaters
  • Southern California: Incentives start at $3,100 for unitary heat pump water heaters
  • Additional opportunities exist for central systems and commercial projects
  • Bonus “kicker” incentives are available for meeting specific requirements (see below)

How to Get Started

To begin offering these incentives, follow these steps:

1. Get Certified

Become a TECH Clean California-certified contractor.

2. Complete Required Training

Contractors must attend training through both TECH Clean California and the ENERGY STAR® Heat Pump Water Heater Manufacturer Action Council (ESMAC).

Training requirements:

  • At least one team member must complete the training and the post-training survey to begin offering incentives.
  • All installers on a TECH-submitted project must complete:
    • This training, or
    • A TECH-approved manufacturer training, or
    • A state-certified apprenticeship program

3. Watch the Onboarding Video

Visit the AEA Electrification Knowledge Hub and watch the required video titled:

"Key Requirements for Heat Pump Water Heater Projects"

This additional step is essential for full onboarding.

Bonus Incentive Opportunities

Boost your customers’ savings with additional “kicker” incentives for qualifying installations:

  • ✅ Units using refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 150 or less
  • ✅ Units with a storage capacity of 55 gallons or more
  • Electrical upgrade incentives for residential unitary systems
